LABOR DAY WEEKEND SEES CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP RETURN TO JACKSONVILLE AFTER 30 YEARS

PARTICIPATION IN THE TOURNAMENT, CHESS REPRESENTS EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

Jacksonville, FL, August 28- the Arnold Denker Florida State Chess Championship to be held September 1-4, 2017 at the Jacksonville Marriott. The 3-day main event expects to draw over 170 players competing for $10,000 in prizes. Players from as far away as Canada and Uganda are already committed to play in the three-day main event; a
one-day scholastic tournament will be held on Sunday September 3.  The Jacksonville event has targeted strong student participation because participation in Chess is associated with critical measures of student educational success and achievement.

The Florida Chess Association sponsors this annual event, but Creating Higher Educational Success in Schools is the organizer of this year’s tournament with Steve Lampkin acting as Chief tournament director assisted by the president of the Jacksonville chess club Kevin Pryor. A Jacksonville native and president of the Florida Chess Association William Bowman states, “I am excited that the tournament returns to my hometown after such a long absence.”

Many school districts across the country are using chess as a valuable educational tool. The North Tonawanda, NY school district has seen students’ critical thinking, reading, and problem-solving skills improve since implementing a chess program. Currently the Orange County Public Schools have a chess program in 129 of their schools with plans on expanding into all 188 of their schools within the next 2 years.

J

JAXCC thanks Judy Johnson, retired teacher and grandmother for donating 25 chess sets to be used for scholastic events. Judy's husband, Ronald, had purchased the sets many years ago for use in a school program. When the school ended the chess program they contacted her to see if she wanted them back. At her husband's request, she collected them and they sat in storage for years. Upon Ronald's passing she thought about placing them in the hands of people who would get the most use knowing he would have wanted that too. She called us and we had the pleasure of meeting her and accepting the donation. The sets are in excellent condition, considering their age, with 25 boards and triple weighted pieces individually bagged. A wonderful gift that will be put to good use for years to come. Thank you, Judy and Ronald.

Great 14 player turnout in JAX for this event. If you missed it then save the date: May 5, 2018 for QC-2018. This year we had $250 in cash prizes and loads of fun for our players. Kira Caza won the cup on tiebreaks in the Champion's section and Reagan Foote was the winner in the Reserve U600 section. See full photos on our facebook site.

The window to register and get a 2017 shirt is closed. Online registration is still open at www.chessregister.com. Below is the list of players who have registered as of Tuesday for 2017 QC!
