Parents/Members/Coaches/Friends,
After finding out about our work with on our QUEEN'S CUP CHALLENGE- our all girls/women event (and a few key cancellations), US Chess Women's Committee Chair has asked JAXCC to support the 2017 Girl's Room at Nationals this Friday-Sunday.  I accepted on our behalf.
The room is for girls, their parents, coaches and family to stop by and play relax, analyze games, paint nails and socialize between games.
We will get to spend time with two excellent chess players who will be in the room to support girls - Women's International Master (WIM) Carolina Blanco & the current U.S. Champion Sabina Foisor, a Womens Grandmaster (WGM). Be right there as the analyze games or teach the people in the room over the 3 days. Few people get this kind of access, especially to the current US Champion.

We're asking for people who will volunteer one or two rounds  coverage in the Girls Club Room on Saturday or Sunday.  Friday is filled already.  We also need people to rotate coverage at the Women's Chess table near Chess.com's table.

Please send a response if you are open to donating a round or two to help on the biggest stage ever.

We're closing out the year with a bang! Location: San Jose Church of Christ (small chapel) 6233 San Jose Blvd, JAX, FL

LABOR DAY WEEKEND SEES CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP RETURN TO JACKSONVILLE AFTER 30 YEARS

PARTICIPATION IN THE TOURNAMENT, CHESS REPRESENTS EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

Jacksonville, FL, August 28- the Arnold Denker Florida State Chess Championship to be held September 1-4, 2017 at the Jacksonville Marriott. The 3-day main event expects to draw over 170 players competing for $10,000 in prizes. Players from as far away as Canada and Uganda are already committed to play in the three-day main event; a
one-day scholastic tournament will be held on Sunday September 3.  The Jacksonville event has targeted strong student participation because participation in Chess is associated with critical measures of student educational success and achievement.

The Florida Chess Association sponsors this annual event, but Creating Higher Educational Success in Schools is the organizer of this year’s tournament with Steve Lampkin acting as Chief tournament director assisted by the president of the Jacksonville chess club Kevin Pryor. A Jacksonville native and president of the Florida Chess Association William Bowman states, “I am excited that the tournament returns to my hometown after such a long absence.”

Many school districts across the country are using chess as a valuable educational tool. The North Tonawanda, NY school district has seen students’ critical thinking, reading, and problem-solving skills improve since implementing a chess program. Currently the Orange County Public Schools have a chess program in 129 of their schools with plans on expanding into all 188 of their schools within the next 2 years.
