We'd like to thank everyone for coming out and making our first JAXCC Scholastic Series Event a success!

In each event, players score points both for games played (1 point per game played or full- point bye and ½ point for a half-point bye) and for game results (1 point for every win or full-point bye, and ½ point for every draw or half-point bye).

The maximum score for class trophy purposes is 24 points. There are three classes of trophies:

– Bronze class: 15–17.5 points

– Silver class: 18–20 points

– Gold class: 20.5 or more points

Player Name Total Pts Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4
LAURA  PRICE       3.5      H    W   8     W   5   W   4

For example, Laura Price finished the tournament with 3.5 points out of 4. She requested a first round bye because she was running late from her soccer game. As a result of requesting a bye, she qualifies for a ½ point bye. If she was not paired for the first round or any other round due to an uneven number of participants, she would have received a full-point bye.

Laura had a great tournament and won her next 3 games. For game 1 she gets .5 points for games played and .5 points for game results, totaling 1 point for Round 1. For Rounds 2, 3 and 4 she gets a full point for each game played, totaling 3 points. She also gets a full point for each game won, totaling another 3 points. When we tally everything up, Laura has a cumulative total of 7 points for the October tournament.

Cumulative points will be updated here after every tournament in the series.

Final Player Preparations

Players Checklist for tomorrow:

1. Registration with USCF and USCF ID# (we can register on site, but you can avoid the wait by going to the uschess.org and paying online now. Make sure to print a copy of the temporary card. Bring it tomorrow. Players without a USCF ID# or not paying for USCF membership will be paired in the non-rated section.

2. Completed EVENT Registration form with selection of 1, 2, or 3 events for the series. Pay for your entry. Check or cash will be accepted only. No credit cards. Remember savings build in for all three. Jacksonville-Chess-Club-Scholastic-Series

3. Bring your own chess set, board and pieces to the event. None will be provided. We will have some scoresheets only. MARK YOUR PIECES and Clock.Sets get confused and without names or initials on bottom of pieces or boldly written on clocks, confusion sets in when time to pack up after each game. MARK YOUR PIECES. You'll thank us later.

4. Set your chess clock tonight! There are several kinds of clocks and few people are experts at setting more than one type. KNOW YOUR CLOCK. PRACTICE SETTING IT TONIGHT! Time control is G/30:d5. Stated as Game in 30 with a 5 second delay. Means each player has 30 minutes on their clock face. You have to program the clock to  something like this IMG_2023 Both sides having 30 minutes. NOW the 5 second delay--- this is a feature that makes the clock wait for 5 seconds BEFORE officially counting down a players time. It allows players a chance to write their move without the clock impacting their time. IT MUST BE SET by reading the instruction manual for your clock.

4. Make plans for bringing or providing lunch for your player. The event will last until around 3 or 4 pm. No food or drink is provided.

5. Join the Jacksonville Chess Club to support chess in North Florida. We have worked to bring the club back and we have a long way to go. Take advantage of the built in savings on events for club members. We want you on our team. Youth membership is $10/year, $20 for adults, and $35 for families. The membership pays for itself.

6. Make plans to arrive early. There will be lines of people registering. We need to get that done before starting round 1. Location 6233 San Jose Blvd. San Jose Church of Christ. Family Life Center is on the right facing the street.

Area schools, players, chess clubs and teams

All are invited to play in the first area-wide USCF scholastic chess tournament in Jacksonville in almost a decade.

Part of our mission is to expand chess in North Florida and we are a breath away from seeing this happen. We're excited and interest is growing quickly. Our website alone received almost 100 visits and the scholastic page drew a large portion of the hits. We have also reached out to Principals in Duval and Clay this week as well as connections with home schoolers network. We fully expect to see more players as our series continues.

New to youth chess tournaments?

Here is a great article on USCF (the official sanctioning body for chess our country) tournaments and what every parent/player should know about them Parent's Guide to Scholastic Tournaments. It is an excellent introduction to the chess tournament world.

Three Rated Sections

Rated sections require all players to use a chess clock. Everyone player should have the following:  1) tournament board, 2) tournament chess set  3) their own chess clock 4) scorepad/notebook for notation  5) pen or mechanical pencil. These are the basics. All completed games will be submitted to the United States Chess Federation and each player will receive an official chess rating. Trophies will be awarded for the first three places in each of the three sections.

Non-rated Option (K-6)

We want your beginners too! If your student knows how play, but may not be ready for a rating, have them participate in our non-rated section of the event. This will be a more relaxed section, but wins will count.  Trophies will be awarded for the first three places in this section too.

Visitors and the curious are welcomed

Round one will began immediately after registration is complete (for those who have not pre-registered).  All four rounds should be completed by mid-afternoon, so there is plenty of time to stop by the San Jose Church of Christ venue. The address is 6233 San Jose Blvd. Just south of University Blvd and north of the Bolles School.

United States Chess Federation (U.S.C.F.) sanctioned Scholastic events  have returned to North Florida.

We are happy to announce that USCF Rated chess tournaments for scholastic players (Grade levels K through 12) have returned to the North Florida area. These tournaments will require all players follow the established tournament format that characterizes the major events held in other parts of the state and around the country. This series will offer one event every month and group them together in a quarterly series format.  Go to our events tab for more information for our 2015 Fall Series.
