We've just completed our 4th scholastic series which was held in conjunction with the JAX City Championship. Several of our stronger players played in the City Championships and competed against the adults leaving just one section U700 USCF with a solid 10 player turnout. 2016 Fall Standings

We host at least two scholastic series within a calendar year consisting of a 4-round event over 3 consecutive months (example, Fall -SEP, OCT, DEC). Our next series begins on February 4th. All events are USCF rated and open to all players from K to 12th grade. New players can join the US Chess Federation on the spot, but this registration is a requirement to play. The event has two sections K-6 for non-rated to players with ratings under 700 USCF. The stronger players are in the  K-12 Open section.  There is a reward structure with trophies for the top three every month in each section. All players earn points for participation, draws and wins that help qualify them for series categories of Bronze, Silver & Gold levels. Email us for more information

Funny thing has happened after hosting a total of 16 rounds of competitive chess - the players have become friends who now do things together outside of chess. Visits to Legoland, movies and just hanging out. We never expected that very special side of connection when we started all this last year. Also, many of our players now compete in regional, state and national events as individuals, but are always glad to see friendly faces when out of town. Who knows, but this could be the start of lifelong friendships. We'll just keep hosting and see how it turns out.

Scenes from our final event. Make plans to join us in February.

Excellent 46 player turnout was capped by the crowning of the JAX City Champion, Laura Zayas Gonzales who finished with 4.5 out of 5.0. She is the first female City Champ. Bravo, Laura! dsc_0079

We started this program last year and have dozens of youth chess players attend. The event is USCF rated, 4 rounds with chess clocks and follows all USCF rules. It is great training for kids and a nice complement to our chess development program. Several of our scholastic players are now playing in Open tournaments and scoring wins against adults.

Our first look at 2017 dates is now on the website.  As with this year, we try to hold to the dates, but the actual content/offer is subject to change. The dates have been chosen by looking at major holidays, national, state and regional published events to select our dates with minimal conflict. It is not our desire to book over other chess events, so we send our schedule out to tournament organizers too. In 2017 there will be several championships (Blitz, Quick, JAX City and Queen's Cup) and one scholastic championship. Next July we are holding to the 2-day North Florida Open and may try to sneak in one more 2-dayer, if possible. We are also entertaining a Summer Camp offering by partnering with George Foote's established program, mychessclub.org. Thanks for supporting our local chess club.

2016 Quick Champion Jorge Leon Oquendo (2470 USCF) finished perfect with 5.0 to win 1st place and the trophy. The event drew 37 player with Scot Cavan finishing on top of the U1550 Reserve section.
